KEARNEYSVILLE — Pyramid Healthcare has expanded its outreach by offering new detoxification services at Pyramid Healthcare Mountaineer Treatment Center.

Pyramid Healthcare has been serving people in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia for more than 25 years and is dedicated to helping people receive the treatment they need.

Earlier this year, Pyramid Healthcare acquired Mountaineer Recovery Center as it worked to fight the opioid crisis in the Eastern Panhandle. With such limited options for patients who need medical detox, Pyramid Healthcare decided to provide these services itself, instead of sending patients across state lines.

Daniel Gellman, vice president of marketing at Pyramid Healthcare, talked about why having these services is so important to its patients.

“We believe it’s important to provide more resources to fight the opioid crisis,” Gellman said. “We saw an opportunity to fulfill the needs here by offering these services. We are the first to offer detox services like this in the Eastern Panhandle.”

One of the main goals is to remove as many barriers to getting treatment as possible. Before these services were offered, many patients had to go across state lines to get the treatment they needed. It could take two to six hours to get to a treatment center, and many patients couldn’t get the transportation they needed.

Now, the only thing patients need to do is complete a phone screening, where they answer a few questions to determine if they need detox services. If they qualify for treatment, Pyramid Healthcare will transport the patient, and they will receive detox treatment for five to seven days before moving on to other recovery programs to prevent future substance addictions.

Gellman shared that these services are a complete game changer for the Eastern Panhandle.

“When you open new services like this in an underserved area, providing easy access to care is critical,” Gellman said. “When someone decides to seek treatment, they need treatment immediately. Once they start feeling withdrawal symptoms, the easiest way to get rid of them is to start using again, so they are more likely to change their minds. That’s why it’s so important to get them into treatment as soon as possible.”

Pyramid Healthcare’s Mountaineer Detox Center started admitting patients on July 15. It is currently only serving male patients for its detox services, but it is working on building another treatment center dedicated to women who are seeking treatment and plans to complete the new center by the end of August. There will be 20 detox beds in total.

“We are excited to bring more access to care,” Gellman said. “We plan to continue to grow and offer more care to patients in the future.”
